    2. Research experience

Lei Jilin, a marine fish culture specialist, the founder of theory and technology of fish propagation and enhancement, was born in May 1935 in Ninghua, Fujian Province. He has been working in Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences since graduated from the Department of Biology of Shandong University in 1958. Meanwhile, he has been an adjunct professor of Ocean University of China and Xiamen University. He was honored with the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2005.

Academician Lei Jilin pursued his studies on propagation, ecology, embryology, industrialized seed rearing and enhancement techniques and got remarkable achievements on his studies. Especially, he made outstanding contributions to importing, innovating and developing of industrialization of a foreign well-bred species, Scophthalmus maximus (turbot). It forcefully impelled the forming and expansion of “Fourth Tidal Wave” of Chinese marine culture. He has made the following main achievements.

Initiate the precedent of the study on the industrialized marine fish seed rearing.

He began to study the artificial breeding of marine fish in the university since 1957 and surmounted in the study on the industrialized seed rearing of redeye mullet from 1958 to 1966. During 60s to the early 90s, he succeeded in researches on the theory and techniques of culture and enhancement of 22 marine fish species. 8 species of them have been used in industry successfully, such as red sea bream, Japanese Flounder, puffer and so on. By this time, he initiated the industrialized seed rearing crafts of marine fish, which is adaptable to China and still adopted by the area along the coast till now.

    Introduce turbot to China firstly

According to the Problems of difficulties of “over-winter” for a lot of warm water fishes and low profit for farmers in northern China, Professor Lei has put forward the introduction of species which is charactered by low temperature-resistance and fast growth earlier. He began to mastermind on the introduction of turbot in 1976. And he went to UK for study tour in 1980 and 1991 twice. After returned he appealed to introduce turbot to China by bewriting and creating the introducing conditions actively. His desirability was finally realized in August 1992, with the enthusiastic help of Dr. B. R. Howell and Mr. Paul West. The great breakthrough in the key techniques of the seed rearing was made under his leadership after seven years from the turbot introducing. He initiated the continuous multi-patch industrialized rearing craft by using deep well seawater in greenhouse. Currently the annual total rearing seeds have exceeded 80 million pieces. All of these established favorable basis for turbot culture in northern China.

Initiate new model of the industrialized fish culture

Professor Lei has put forward to speeding up exploration of the industrialized fish culture and being not only limited by the traditional culture model in China from early of the 70s last century, for which he has made strenuous efforts. During the ten years after the introduction of turbot, his teammates and he have initiated a new industrialized flowing-water fish culture model ——“Greenhouse + Deep Well Seawater”, which is popular in China. Till the year 2006, the industrialized culture area of greenhouses for turbot culture reaches to 5,000 thousand square meters. The annual total production is above 50,000 tons and the total value is more than 4.5 billion Yuan. It has become the investment hotspot in the area along the coast of northern China and attracted some famous foreign enterprise’s investment, such as Norwegian Panfish Co. Liminted. What’s more, it made great efforts to the development of “Three Rural Economics” for the coastal area. Therefore, the introduction of turbot is considered as the most successful marine fish species introduction project in China, and Lei Jilin is reputed as “Father of Turbot in China.”

Because of the prominent contributions he has made to the society, Professor Lei won “Second Class National Scientific and Technological Progress” prizes in 1997 for the project “8th 5 Year Plan Tackle Key Problem”—— “Study on the Techniques of Enhancement in Bohai Sea” and in 2001 for the project “948 item” of Agriculture Dept. — “Turbot Introduction and Techniques on Seed Rearing”, respectively. He has been awarded Labor Decoration of “Fu Min Xing Lu” by the government of Shandong province in 2000, Prize of “Notable Contributor of Qingdao” by the government of Qingdao in 2001, “Scientific and Technological Innovation” Prize of Dubang in 2002 and “Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation” in 2006, etc.. He has published more than 140 thesises, 7 monographs and coauthored monographs, such as 《Marine Fish Culture Theory and Techniques》 and 《Turbot Farming Techniques》, etc.. In order to complying with the developing trend of marine fish culture industrialization, Professor Lei shows great foresight in target at “Grand Industrialized Construction of Marine Fish Culture”. He resolves to go on with contributing on the work of realizing fine breed culturing, promoting industrialized level and training advanced person with high ability.
