    Sino-US Workshop on “Key technologies for rebuilding the declining fishery stocks in coastal waters” held in YSFRI

    The first Sino-US workshop on “Key technologies for rebuilding the declining fishery stocks in coastal waters” was held in Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, on 18-19, October 2014. This project was funded by the International Science & Technology Cooperation Program of China.

    About 22 people attended the workshop. Both project coordinators of the Chinese and US sides, Dr. JIN Xianshi, Director General of YSFRI and Dr. Ken Leber from MOTE Marine laboratory, participated in this workshop. A number of project partners, invited speakers, and guests also attended the workshop.

    During the workshop, Prof. JIN gave an introduction to the project and its work plan. Project secretary, Dr. SHAN Xiujuan made introductions to the background of this project, along with its task assignments and management procedures.

    Dr. Ken Leber delivered two speeches onUnderstanding and Improving Fisheries Enhancement EffectivenessandIncreasing Yields & Efficiency in Marine Fisheries Enhancements: By using ‘Active Adaptive Management’. He introduced some problems on stock enhancement in the first presentation, combined with the detailed case studies, and gave reasonable suggestions, including release size, release site and tagging recapture and so on. In the second presentation, in terms of the problems of stock enhancement, he introduced the active adaptive management, as well as optimized release protocol.

    US project partner, Dr. Lee Blankenship gave a talk onA Responsible Approach to Marine Stock Enhancement. He provided a responsible approach to marine stock enhancement, by focusing on responsible approaches on stock enhancement, and introduced ten key elements to realize the responsible stock enhancement.

    Dr. QIN Chuanxin, of South China Sea Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, delivered a presentation on recent development of fishery stock restoration in South China Sea. He introduced the work on artificial reef and sea ranching in the South China Sea, and gave some new ideas on evaluating the efficacy of artificial reefs.

    The “Key technologies for rebuilding the declining fishery stocks in coastal waters” project was funded by the International Science & Technology Cooperation Program of China in 2013. Duration of this project is 2013-2015. The Chinese partners of this project include YSFRI, Resource and Environment Center of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, and Yantai University. The US partner is MOTE Marine Laboratory.
